TEchnology in my Year 2
In the development of the e-learning resources for my project, I deliberately sought to identify free or readily available technologies. This is in the interest of minimising barriers for tutors who may be interested in adopting similar approaches in their own practice.
The approach that I have taken is a 5 step process using multiple technologies as follows:
The approach that I have taken is a 5 step process using multiple technologies as follows:
- I use SketchUp software to create a 3D model of a house from which video animations can be derived to show sections through the building fabric explaining concepts that are central to low energy buildings.
- This video is uploaded to Windows Movie maker where it is edited and audio added.
- I then create a PowerPoint presentation which introduces a concept and embeds the relevant SketchUp video animation.
- Audio is added and the entire presentation and is saved as a video and uploaded to Youtube.
- H5P software is used to add interactive elements to the presentation such as multiple choice questions, drag and drop exercises, fill in the blanks and summary activities. H5P has limited video file uploads to 16 MB. The need for an external server or subscriptions for website development software for larger file sizes can be avoided by uploading videos from Youtube.
Windows Movie Maker is video editing software created by Microsoft and is usually available as part of Windows operating systems or for free download (a new version was available in January 2017). It allows for the editing of videos including the addition of captions, snipping and joining, adding audio and other effects.

Microsoft PowerPoint is a slideshow presentation software that is fuctional across a number of operating platforms. It is usuallly available as part of different versions of Windows Office suite. It allows for the embedding of animations, videos, hypertexts and the addition of audio. Presentations can be timed manually by the user or saved as a video. |
